Sunshine Coast Artists are featured at the Olympics Games

Sunshine Coast – January 14, 2010 – Two Sunshine Coast artists are creating art of Olympic proportions. Dionne Paul, a Sechelt First Nation artist will exhibit her stained glass work at the Killarney Community Centre - 2010 venue for short track speed skating, and Gordon Halloran will unveil a three-dimensional ice installation at Richmond's City at the O Zone, a 2010 celebration site.

Dionne Paul’s 47 sq. metre stained-glass work titled The Eyes of the People was selected by VANOC for the Venues’ Aboriginal Arty Program after a long application process. The Emily Carr University of Art and Design graduate works in various mediums and styles including metal, glass, wood, painting and weaving. The stained glass piece is based on a weaving design that represents yellow and red cedar—inspired by the Sunshine Coast from a Coast Salish eye.

Gordon Halloran’s Ice Gate will be 30 metres across by four metres high, which will be attached a special refrigerated wall built near his home on the Sunshine Coast. The artwork will be covered by Plexiglas to keep it dry and cold and engineered to not fog up. His inspiration comes from years of perfecting backyard ice rinks in Ontario, playing hockey and seeing ice as a blank canvas. Hallaron is currently completing his masterpiece and the public will have to wait to see what it is about when it is unveiled in Richmond. www.richmondozone.ca, http://theicegate.blogspot.com

About the Sunshine Coast Art Scene

Arts and culture is woven into the fabric of the Sunshine Coast, a place that has attracted a creative community of artists, writers and musicians. The relaxed pace along with spectacular scenery makes the Sunshine Coast a haven for the creative arts and artistic residents. The coast has embraced the artistic lifestyle of its residents and encourages visitors to pick up a Purple Banner Route brochure, a self-guided artisan tour map, which leads to various galleries, studios and workshops. A Purple flag indicates an artist in residence creating their next masterpiece.

About the Sunshine Coast

Named for its 2,400 hours of annual sunshine, the Sunshine Coast stretches along 180 km of land which boasts some of the world’s best boating, fishing, scuba diving biking and hiking. Although it is part of the mainland, the coast is only accessible by sea or air.BC Ferries make frequent 40-minute sailings from Horseshoe Bay, just north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway, to Langdale on the Lower Sunshine Coast. BC Ferries also connect Earls Cove north of Sechelt to Saltery Bay near Powell River and link Powell River to Comox on Vancouver Island. West Coast Air flies to Sechelt from Vancouver International Airport to several resorts directly to their docks. www.sunshinecoastcanada.com

VoiceThread - Contest Results - BC - The Best Place On Earth

The Spirit of BC Community Committee - Sunshine Coast invited students (elementary school and secondary school) to take part in a short VoiceThread contest. We wanted students to share their experiences of growing up in BC - The Best Place on Earth.

As we did not receive any submissions in the Class Category, we decided to change the Student category to allow us to award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to each grade (or split grades) that entered from Elphi, Cedar Grove and Halfmoon Bay.

Well done to all of the students who took part! It was really interesting to see the diversity in why they believed B.C. to be the "Best Place on Earth". Whether relating to Gibsons, The Sunshine Coast or elsewhere, the Voicethreads really capture the essence of the students growing up in a caring community and beautiful province.

We did BC Proud as we celebrated the province's 150th Anniversary with the Sunshine Coast BC150 Trek 2008!  Events were planned from Powell River to Gibsons during the August long weekend.

A joint project of Powell River Ayjoomixw and Sunshine Coast Spirit of BC Community
Committees, this regional event celebrated BC's 150th birthday over the August long weekend. Powell River and Sunshine Coast committees planned a series of celebrations that allowed residents and visitors to travel to four communities for fun activities. Participants signed pages for the Coast Trek 150 special commemorative booklet that will be compiled and presented to the Royal BC Museum.

The weekend began with a community picnic on Saturday, August 2 at Willingdon Beach with entertainment, food, birthday banner painting and a birthday cake.

On the Sechelt Peninsula, the Sunshine Coast committee joined the Pender Harbour Wooden Boat Festival at the Millennium Dock and Sechelt Arts Festival at Hackett Park on Sunday, August 3 with a big celebration at Winegarden Park in Gibsons on Monday, August 4.

"BC Day weekend includes a civic holiday intended for all residents and workers to relax and enjoy the beauty and culture offered within 'The Best Place on Earth,'" said Hamilton McClymont, chair of the committee. "We intend to encourage residents and visitors to experience as much of the Sunshine Coast as they can." BC150/Spirit of BC medals for most communities visited, longest distance travelled and best historic costume will be presented.

Funding for the events has been provided by the BC150 Years through 2010 Legacies Now Spirit of BC.

Journey of the Spirit Pole
COWICHAN 2008 SPIRIT POLE: "VICTORY IN SPIRIT, A STORY IN WOOD"

If you were one of the lucky ones you had an experience of a life time! This is what the Spirit Pole will look like when it is raised at the 2008 North American Indigineous Games in Duncan in August - and beside it is what it looked like before Sunshine Coasters did a little carving!

That is Carey Newman - master design and carver (5th generation) explaining the technique.

We were very excited to be included as one of the 45 communities that the Spirit Pole will visit on its journey throughout BC. View tour map

Conceived by the Cowichan 2008 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) leadership and supported by the ministry’s BC150 Years secretariat, the Cowichan 2008 Story Pole: British Columbians Carve a Moment in History tour will be led by a lead carver and his team who will transform a 20-foot western red cedar log into a story pole that commemorates the history of B.C.’s Aboriginal peoples. “The Cowichan 2008 Spirit Pole is our opportunity to bring the message of the Games to all of British Columbia and to celebrate our shared history,” said Cowichan 2008 vice-chair Al Edkins. “We are confident that we have found the right person to deliver these messages through the carving of the pole that will stand as a legacy of British Columbia’s support of the Games.”

Sustainability and the Games

The word sustainability can mean many things to many people. For the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), sustainability means managing the social, economic and environmental impacts and opportunities of our Games to produce lasting benefits — locally and globally.

IOC gives high mark to Vancouver’s Games preparations

On his second visit to Vancouver since the city was awarded the 2010 Olympic Winter Games five years ago, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, praised the progress that the Organising Committee (VANOC) is making. The President was in town at the same time as the Coordination Commission, the group of IOC members and experts monitoring preparations and guiding VANOC throughout the challenging journey leading to the staging of the Olympic Winter Games in 2010.
