CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE

During National Volunteer Week in April 2010, the Sunshine Coast will celebrate its many volunteers and their valuable contribution to the community with a grand event.  Plans are under way for the Celebration of Excellence on April 17th, 2010, an evening celebration in honour of Sunshine Coast male and female volunteers.  The Celebration of Excellence is a community oriented recognition program that has evolved from its roots as the strongly supported Awards of Excellence for Sunshine Coast Women first held in 2008.

Due to the fact that there are so many wonderful volunteers on the Coast, reviewers will be choosing exceptional people in nine different categories.  It would be far too difficult to pick one overall volunteer for the Sunshine Coast.  This community thrives due to its many volunteers who each contribute so much.  We want to honour as many as possible of these wonderful volunteers.

The Celebration of Excellence Nomination campaign will run from January 25th to March 1st, 2010, allowing Sunshine Coast residents the opportunity to nominate their favourite volunteer.  Organizers will be working with various community groups, non profit organizations, businesses and local media to bring awareness to the campaign and to ensure the success of the nomination process and the gala event in April.

Both men and women who reside on the Sunshine Coast are eligible to be nominated.  There are now nine categories for recognizing the excellence of volunteers:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Community Building
  • Environment Protection and Enhancement
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Health and Wellness
  • Non Profit/Public Sector - Exec. Directors, Managers, Teachers
  • Safety
  • Under 21
  • Citation of Outstanding Achievement for long term residents, seniors

Basic Criteria

To be nominated, the volunteer must have served the Sunshine Coast for five years and demonstrate the following criteria:
  • be a leader and role model
  • break new ground
  • participate in a volunteer activity
  • support and encourage the development of others
  • show vision, initiative and creativity
  • make a difference
  • be respected
    Download nomination criteria here.

The steps you follow in order to nominate someone are:

1. Fill out the "intent to nominate" form available at the Sunshine Coast Volunteer Centre.  Or download the intent to nominate form here.  Drop it off at the Volunteer Centre as soon as you fill it out.  This will help us know how many nominations to expect from the community.
2. Obtain the permission of the person you would like to nominate.  They must agree to be nominated.
3. Fill out the full nomination form which is available at the SC Volunteer Centre or download the nomination form here.  Ideally this should take a couple hours, or less if it is a communal effort.  Help is available by calling 604-885-1036 or emailing scvolunteer@dccnet.com.  We have also made a list of questions and answers available.  Download Q&A's here.
4. Bring the completed nomination package to the Volunteer Centre by 4pm on March 1st, 2010.
5. Gather friends and supporters together and come to the Gala event on April 17th, 2010 to witness the honouring of all the finalists nominated for each category.

What a wonderful way to profile all the organizations and their amazing volunteers on the Sunshine Coast!  Nominate a volunteer today!
