June 17-21. It’s challenging to get to grips with wet processes in the world of surface design, and getting to grips with composition can be even harder. This workshop is for intermediate to advanced students who wish to really focus on building their ability with composition in relation to art textiles. An in-depth week of mentorship will explore key design principles, choice of tools to generate the imagery sought and advice & guidance on the order of process. Whilst this is a hands on class, the goal will not be to teach specific technique. Instead, students will be working to the beat of their own dry to generate the work they wish to create.

Over the 2 days participants will have time to experiment, create textures and practice mixing colours. The Setacolor transparent paint has the unique ability to “sunprint” images. Overnight drying time allows undercoats to combine with sunprinting. These layers of colour work together to create cloth with depth and visual interest.

July 19-21. Rug hooking by hand is a magical, sensuous transformation of fibre and textiles that requires us to value our resources. Many practitioners have hooked with reused textiles, and we will too — with a difference. Beginning with a grounding technique and the easiest materials, we will progress to exploring a variety of textiles and learn variations on the basic technique. Our attention and time interrupt fast fashion and consumer culture. You will leave with a small unique sampler, as well as the tools, knowledge and resources to start your next project as you develop a sense of the creative potential and limits of rug hooking.
