Alabaster, cream, eggshell, ivory, vanilla, fog, parchment, cloud, bone. . . Anyone confronted with choosing a white paint knows that white is rarely a pure thing. It is almost always imbued with colour of some kind. For artists, exploring the wide range of white while incorporating texture and pattern opens up a world of possibilities. In this exhibition of textile and fibre based art, members of the Sunshine Coast Surface Design Group embrace the fullness of WHITE in unique and surprising ways.

This is an exhibition of works by artists who live and work in the traditional territories of the shishalh nation. These artists are connected by their relationship with texem-ay or red cedar and through their practices they reveal their reciprocity and respect for the tree of life. Shyanne Waters, a member of shishalh (Sechelt) Nation who also has Squamish, Sliammon (Coast Salish) and Kwakwaka’wakw ancestry, weaves intricate designs and patterns from her rich cultural background. Her medium is cedar. Derek Georgeson is a member of the Homalco First Nations. He has been carving since 2006, and currently resides on the Sunshine Coast. This group came together to share ideas, imagination and skills related to digital textile work. While encouraging each other through support and inspiration, they push the boundaries of their own practice through experimentation. For this exhibition, each artist chose a personal photograph, “Exchanged” it with the group members and twenty-five inspired artworks resulted in five distinct interpretations of each photo. This exhibit showcases these pieces as well as selected works from the ongoing photographic explorations of the artists.

bro·ken . . . damaged or altered, disrupted by change. Imagine a work that lasts for centuries: it ages, it cracks, it may be broken and repaired but the makers vision remains. Imagine what we create now being used, breaking, being mended and repaired, lost and then returned as treasures found. Elizabeth Harris and Catherine Nicholls explore the process of deconstruction in a form of “time travel” with our newly made relics and discover the beauty in the bro·ken. As makers we would be content to see our work live on, in whole or in pieces.
